Effingham Cross

Effingham is a city of 12,384 according to 2000 Census data. It was first settled in 1814 and was originally called Broughton. At the juncture of Interstate 57 and 70, US Routes 40 and 45, and Illinois Routes 32, 33, 37 and 128 the city bills itself as “The Crossroads of Opportunity.” It is also a major railroad junction crossing the Illinois Central and Pennsylvania Railroad lines.

A notable event in Effingham’s history was the St. Anthony’s Hospital fire on the 4th of April, 1949. The Hospital burned to the ground killing 74 people. This lead to improved fire codes nationwide, and the extensive media coverage led to donations for rebuilding the hospital from all 48 states and several foreign countries.

The monument pictured above was erected by The Cross Foundation utilizing over $1 million in private donations. It is constructed of over 180 tons of steel, and is only 10 feet shorter than the 208 foot Great Cross in St. Augustine, but is much more massive than the Great Cross.
